The world's oceans have recorded record temperatures in 2022 due to climate change, with 90% of the excess heat being caused by pollution. This warming has devastating effects on underwater life, leading to stratification (the water separates into layers of different degrees of salinity, which no longer mix) and ocean deoxygenation (the exchange of heat, oxygen and carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere is disrupted). Climate change has also caused the temperature on land to rise, leading to atmospheric instability and the amplification of extreme weather events. Scientists warn that until the net zero emissions target is reached, ocean temperatures will continue to rise, further damaging marine life.
