Ozone layer recovery is on track

The ozone layer is recovering and will be complete again within four decades thanks to the campaign to phase out the chemicals that were damaging it. That's the conclusion of a UN-backed panel of experts presented today at the 103rd annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society. Examining new technologies such as geo-engineering for the first time, the panel warns of their unwanted impacts on the ozone layer. The report, published every four years by the Montreal Protocol's Scientific Assessment Panel on Substances that Deplete the Ozone, confirms the elimination of nearly 99% of banned ozone-depleting substances. The Montreal Protocol thus succeeded in protecting the ozone layer, leading to its remarkable recovery. Source: UNEP
